Chapter 10

Nadia, utterly focused on the werewolf and his bat, watched Jade Mansion out of the corner of her eye. Nothing moved over there. No one came running out, there were no shouts, no one even sneaking out quietly. She did not want to draw Darrow’s attention. For once she knew something about him he wasn’t aware she knew. He’d underestimated her, and that was a good thing.

But not for long if this guard had any say. And a guard was exactly what he was. The only reason she hadn’t spotted him while scouting the area was that she couldn’t hear him, or smell him. He was cleverly hidden, and the smell could easily be disguised with bland asphodel, but the lack of sound? That usually took some heavier magic.

“Attacking one of the Queen’s Wraiths is against the law,” she told him.

“Like I care about her law. It’s for humans and other species.”

“No, it applies to us all.”

“Not for long.”

Nadia frowned at the comment, but that was when the guard attacked. He jumped forward, onto the table and leaped toward her, bat raised.

Nadia swept sideways and swung her sword, parrying the bat, and forcing it in another direction than her head. The guard hit the deck and didn’t let up. He swung the bat again, but the thick and blunt weapon was easy to see for someone trained to fight light and thin blades blurring through the air. Nadia parried and deflected his attempts, all the while moving back, away from the side of the terrace facing the street where Jade Mansion lay. She didn’t think they could be heard, but she sure didn’t want to be seen by anyone in there either.

Time to rid the guard of the bat. She didn’t need to see the edge where she’d climbed up to know it was there. She had no wish to tumble over, head first.

The bat came her way again, and this time she angled the blade of her sword so it bit into the wood. The guard stumbled a step, the bat not swinging freely anymore. Nadia moved forward, twisted, and kicked him in the gut. He grunted in pain and stumbled some more, holding on to the bat for dear life. Nadia jumped back and yanked her sword toward her. The bat, with her blade biting deep into it, was wrenched from his hands. Nadia retreated to the barrier in quick, short steps, never turning her back on him. She swung her sword and slammed the bat against the barrier. The abrupt impact knocked it off her sword, and it clattered to the deck. Out of his reach.

The guard regained his balance and gave her a death glare. Without a weapon, he simply ran toward her and shifted while in motion. Nadia saw his human features change into the wolfish form of a werewolf in a mere second—a bipedal creature, fully covered in dark grayish-brown fur, with a huge and heavily muscled body which retained some human-like proportions. His pointed ears, fangs, and muzzle were not human in the least.
